Filipino Artistry: Lumban Embroidery in Modern Times

Filipino Artistry: Lumban Embroidery in Modern Times

This video is about embroidery in Lumban but with modern touchThe person I interviewed for this only started her business in embroidery in 1991, unlike others who are already in the business since the 70s or could be earlier than that.

Because of their artistry or the way they embroidered on Barongs and Terno (Filipiniana clothes), Lumban was declared as Embroidery Capital of the Philippines. They even have festival to commemorate their arts.

Here is the link of my video:

Below are the pictures I had with the workers of Lumban

DevCom: Making it Viral

Realizations on Development Communication

DevCom: Making it Viral

Comparing personal experience to just mere observation on how mass communication really works, I can’t help but wonder why with development communication it seems it is not well practiced.

But upon learning what development communication really is, I understand its existence, it is being around but it is not that exposed like what we used to have with the traditional media where we can see and hear everywhere from TV, radio, print, billboards, internet or social media. People are so much exposed on what the traditional media is giving to them because of its entertainment value.

Since most of the time, the topics for development communication are on more serious stuff especially if it involves advocacies, some people tend to ignore it. But I do remember with the campaign on bringing your own environment friendly bag (eco-bag) instead of using plastic bags to the malls, most people join the advocacy. First to experience it was Los Banos, Laguna. Because of the success of the campaign, residents and even tourists get used to it and become cooperative and everyone is doing it. Then other cities follow suit and it is becoming successful. I believed that bringing of own eco-bag to be used to whenever buying grocery items was campaigned properly and was explained thoroughly to its target audience.  For me this is already an example of devcom making it VIRAL.

It is also said that with devcom, it uses the same medium as traditional media in bringing its message to its people. It is just that it creates more public awareness. If this is the case, the more it should be viral especially now with the help of social media this should happen more. Sharing, posting, blogging about certain advocacies through Facebook, Twitter, Wordpress and other means of communication through the internet more people will become aware of it and many people can help spread the awareness. For me it is really time to make any DevCom topic to make it VIRAL. People need not only to be entertained and informed, they need to learn and be exposed to what is right, proper and appropriate for them.

With the use of media, making influence is so easy, so why not use it the proper way. There are many topics or issues that need to be addressed like about environment, education, sustainable agriculture, health, poverty, gender issues, equality and others alike. It is time to make awareness for each one of it and spread the news about it.

TRASH AVP

Ebilane's Audio-Video presentation

TRASH

TRASH stands for The Recycle Association House which aims to help and teach the people on proper way of throwing their garbage by segregating the biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes. By doing this, the recyclable materials like bottles, cans, papers, plastics, and other dry materials can be brought to the junk shop or to facilities where they will recycle the said materials into something new and usable item. Whereas, the non-biodegradable wastes which are not harmful or toxic can be used as fertilizer for farming.

It has a tag line “Me Healing M.E.” whereas M.E. stands for Mother Earth. Each one of us, personally, has an obligation to be part on healing the Mother Earth. We can do this by starting on our own backyard and make it a habit to throw our garbage properly.

It also has a vision that not anything that we throw is already a waste, because it believes that when a trash considered as a waste it means it is nothing already. In TRASH, garbages are not waste-it is something that can be useful if properly segregated and properly distributed to agencies who uses recyclable materials as their items, such as bags made of plastics, walls that made of tin cans and others.

The logo is a simple heart where earth is inside of it, this shows that the earth is being loved and taken care of every person especially those who have a good heart.

Be safe for 2013

Christmas season is already here and every time people celebrate this festive season firecrackers are one of the main events. Buying firecrackers is part of the things to do by many of us, aside from buying gifts for exchange gifts and spending for foods for Noche Buena and Media Noche.

However, the Department of Health (DOH) is asking people to avoid using firecrackers because accidents could happen. A number of people loosing some of their fingers, hands or even arms and legs are some of the cases encountered everytime we welcome the New Year. Instead of celebrating with joy, some celebrate it with sadness and regret.

On the website of DOH, it is said that they already started with the campaign “APIR (Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction), IWAS PAPUTOK” and encouraging people to use horns, pots and pans, loud music, street parties on making noise.

Since 1992, there is already a law, Republic Act 7183, which regulates the use, the manufacturing, selling and distribution of firecrackers and even Pyrotechnic devices.

Even the environmental group EcoWaste Coalition is joining forces with the DOH on Iwas Paptok Campaign, but it is called Iwas PapuToxic. They said using firecrackers is not helpful to the environment and making it more polluted. They also supports’ DOH drive on using horns or loud musics.

Part of the campaign is this: click here and enjoy! =)
